In the world of camping stoves, one spec stands out: BTUs, short for British Thermal Units. When you’re cooking outside—whether at a campsite, backcountry basecamp, or a windy roadside pullout—few things matter more than how hot your stove can get and how quickly it can get the job done. BTUs are the standard way to measure heating power, but what exactly do they mean, and why are they so important when you’re cooking in the wild? Below, we break down everything you need to know about BTUs.
BTUs are a common way to measure heat. More specifically, one BTU is the amount of energy it takes to raise the temperature of one pound of water by one degree Fahrenheit. It’s a technical definition, but the takeaway is more straightforward in the world of camping stoves: The higher the BTU rating, the more power the burner has. And while this metric shows up a lot in the camping space, it’s not exclusive to the outdoors—you’ll also see BTU ratings on BBQ grills, home stoves, and furnaces. It’s a universal measure for understanding how much heat a device can generate.
It’s worth noting that not all stoves speak in BTUs. Some European models, for example, list output in watts instead. In those cases, you can use a rough conversion: 1 watt equals about 3.41 BTUs per hour. That said, every model in our camping stoves gear guide uses BTUs to measure its power.
We don’t like to bury the lede, so let’s get you some numbers. The most powerful camping stove we cover is the Camp Chef Everest 2X, which has dual burners with a whopping 20,000 BTUs each. The majority of compact camping stoves are in the 10,000 to 12,00 BTU range, which we’ve found to be perfectly sufficient. For example, the Coleman Cascade 3-in-1 has dual 12,000 BTU burners, and the more budget-oriented Coleman Cascade Classic drops down to two 10,000 BTU burners. At the low end, the GSI Selkirk Butane, which is designed to be compact and streamlined, has a single 8,000 BTU burner.
It’s worth noting that this article is centered on relatively portable and light stoves for car camping. For group campouts or extended hunting trips, a larger freestanding design like the Camp Chef Explorer bumps the output higher to 30,000 BTUs per burner. But again, that model realistically is in a different category altogether. Camping stoves are meant to be decently portable, pack up easily, and fit in your car. You could bring the Explorer camping, but at over 30 pounds without the propane tank, it’s a lot to handle.
Before jumping further into camping stoves, let’s provide some context. In your home kitchen, the smallest burners usually max out in the low to mid-thousands of BTUs, and they’re perfect for simmering sauces, melting butter, or keeping food warm without scorching it. Mid-range burners, which fall anywhere from the mid-thousands up to around 10,000 BTUs, are your everyday workhorses—great for sautéing, browning, and pretty much anything that doesn’t require either extreme precision or raw power. High-output burners typically break the 12,000-BTU mark and shine when you need to boil water quickly or get a hard sear on meat. And in more specialized setups—think commercial kitchens—you’ll sometimes see burners pushing well past 50,000 BTUs, with some topping 100,000. At that level, you’re dealing with serious firepower.
Cooking at home is relatively predictable—you’re working in a stable environment with no wind, steady temperatures, and a consistent elevation (often at sea level or lower elevation). That kind of control makes your kitchen range feel effortless: you turn a burner on, and it works. But in the backcountry, things get a lot more complicated. Gusty winds can blow out a weak flame. Rain or snow can snuff out your fire or introduce moisture that interferes with combustion. Cold temperatures and high elevations can even change how gas behaves, reducing pressure and flame strength. All of these environmental variables can seriously impact how well your stove performs—and that’s precisely where BTUs become critical.
A stove with a higher BTU rating gives you a better shot at cooking efficiently through challenging conditions. Unlike a full-size range with four burners and lots of wiggle room, most camp stoves only offer two small burners and a compact workspace. If you're cooking for a group or trying to make hot food quickly in bad weather, that extra power matters. Lower-BTU stoves can still get the job done, but you’ll need more patience—and better conditions.
For most campers, a stove with at least 10,000 BTUs per burner is the baseline for reliable outdoor cooking. That level of output gives you enough heat to boil water quickly and whip up meals without too much waiting around. Some models, like the compact GSI Selkirk Butane, come in under that threshold, but they’re typically built with a specific use case in mind—lightweight, minimalist setups where full-range performance isn’t the goal.
On the other end of the spectrum, stoves like the Camp Chef Everest 2X deliver serious firepower with dual 20,000-BTU burners. While that might sound excessive by kitchen standards, the extra muscle can be a real asset when cooking in wind, cold, or at elevation—not to mention when feeding a hungry group. That said, more BTUs mean more fuel burned (more on that topic below). If you’re stepping up to a higher-output model, be ready to pack extra propane—or plan on shorter runtimes between refills.
While BTUs are an important benchmark, they don’t tell the whole story when it comes to camp stove performance. Wind protection, burner design, and temperature control all have a big impact on how well a stove actually cooks in the field. A good windscreen can make or break your flame in breezy conditions, and stoves with solid, wraparound shielding tend to maintain heat far more effectively. Burner design and size matter too. We’ve seen cases where a lower BTU burner outperforms a higher one simply because it spreads heat more evenly.
For instance, in our testing, the 10,000-BTU burners on the Coleman Cascade Classic outshone the slightly more powerful 10,200-BTU burners on the Primus Tupike—mostly because the Coleman’s burners had a wider footprint and better pan contact. Precision temperature control is another critical factor, especially when simmering. And then there’s the pressure regulator—a behind-the-scenes hero that keeps gas output steady when you’re cooking in cold or high-altitude environments. Without one, even a high-BTU stove can struggle when conditions get rough.
That rip-roaring flame with the high BTUs doesn’t come for free. The conditions of your campsite, including the temperature and wind, along with the design of your stove itself, all will impact fuel consumption. But generally speaking, there will be a close correlation between BTUs and fuel efficiency. Fuel type matters as well. In our article on the best camping stoves, we break down the various fuel types in detail, but for a quick summary: Propane is by far the most common fuel for camping stoves, and for good reason. Its relatively high vapor pressure and low boiling point allow it to perform well in challenging conditions, including at high elevations and in cold temperatures. Butane is less common but still relatively popular. Its main advantage is that it comes in smaller, lighter canisters, making it easier to transport than propane, but its boiling point is higher and its vapor pressure is lower, making it less efficient.
At the end of the day, BTUs are a valuable tool—but not the only one—when evaluating a camp stove’s performance. They offer a quick read on power, helping you anticipate how well a stove might handle wind, cold, or the demands of group cooking. But as we’ve seen, raw output isn’t everything. Wind resistance, burner design, fuel efficiency, and temperature control all play a critical role in how a stove performs when it counts. A 20,000-BTU burner might sound like overkill, but in the right conditions, that extra muscle can make a real difference.
