Recycled materials are featured in just over half of the hiking pants we reviewed. Some models go above and beyond: The Patagonia Quandary and REI Co-op Sahara Convertible pants each contain over 95% recycled nylon. Patagonia stands out for sourcing NetPlus recycled nylon, which repurposes discarded fishing nets into recycled nylon fabric. Several pants we reviewed still rely entirely on virgin materials, but momentum is building among top brands to increase recycled content across their product lines.
Less than half of the pants we’ve reviewed incorporate Bluesign-approved materials, a certification that helps ensure safer chemical use and a lower environmental impact during production. Pants that primarily use Bluesign materials include the REI Co-op Trailmade and Sahara Convertible pants, Arc’teryx Gamma and Gamma SL, Eddie Bauer Guide Pro, Outdoor Research Cirque Lite, and Patagonia Quandary. All of these models feature a Bluesign-approved main fabric. If you’re looking for additional sustainability features like recycled materials and a PFAS-free DWR, the Quandry and Gamma pants are our top picks, earning the highest overall sustainability scores. Notably, Patagonia works closely with Bluesign Technologies, with nine of its top suppliers now designated as Bluesign System Partners.
PFAS-free water-repellent treatments are becoming more common in hiking pants, and most of the top-scoring products in our review meet this standard. PFAS, or per and poly-fluoroalkyl substances, are a group of harmful chemicals that have historically been used to make hiking pants water resistant. However, due to increasing legislative and public pressure, outdoor brands are moving away from these chemicals. For this criterion, we include pants that do not use a DWR but offer water resistance performance, like the Outdoor Research Ferrosi and Cirque Lite pants (read the Ferrosi Sustainability Report). In total, around three-quarters of the water-resistant hiking pants we have reviewed use a PFAS-free DWR. Patagonia, Kuhl, and Fjallraven have all completely eliminated PFAS from their waterproof fabric treatments, with Fjallraven beginning its PFAS phase-out over a decade ago.
Durability is a cornerstone of sustainability, and several pants stood out for their robust materials and long-lasting construction. The Fjallraven Vidda Pro Ventilated earns one of the highest longevity ratings in our lineup, scoring a perfect 5 for its full G-1000 build, reinforced seat and knees, scuff guards, and double stitching. Matching that top score is the Outdoor Research Cirque Lite Pants, which also receive a 5 out of 5 for their dense, abrasion-resistant softshell fabric, scuff guards, and high construction quality built for alpine conditions and rough use. Just behind are several strong performers with 4.5 out of 5 ratings, including the Arc'teryx Gamma Pants, Fjallraven Keb Agile Trousers, and Mountain Hardwear Chockstone LT. Each of those is made with premium materials, strategic reinforcements, and durable design elements suited for extended wear.
We briefly considered adding a criterion for solution-dyed materials, but unfortunately, despite their ability to be incorporated into synthetic pants, none were present in the hiking pants we reviewed. We also considered adding a criterion for responsible cotton, but cotton is not used commonly enough in hiking pants to warrant an additional criterion for it at present. If you are looking for pants made with organic cotton, the Fjallraven Vidda Pro Ventilated or Keb Agile Trousers are a good bet. Bio-based materials, such as hemp, could be another criterion to consider in the future, but these materials did not come up in this year’s hiking pants guide.
Almost two-thirds of the brands in our hiking pants roundup offer repair services for their products. Patagonia, Arc’teryx, Fjallraven, and Rab provide comprehensive repair services for most products they make, including hiking pants. Typically, repair programs like these can patch fabric, replace broken zippers, and fix torn seams. Repair services help you keep your gear in use longer, elongating the life of your hiking pants and significantly reducing waste. Other brands offer repair services but are less comprehensive than those offered by the companies highlighted above.
Resale programs are becoming more common at outdoor apparel brands, but recycling programs are still limited at best. Less than half of the brands in the hiking pants category offer such initiatives. Resale programs like Patagonia’s Worn Wear, REI Co-op’s Re/Supply, and Arc’teryx’s ReBird Resale platforms allow you to buy and sell used gear, extending the life of clothing that might otherwise go to waste. Patagonia offers a take-back program for used gear, but the brand publishes limited information about recycling unsalvageable gear. In the future, we hope to see more brands offering recycling services for hiking pants.
Around two-thirds of the brands manufacturing hiking pants meet our criteria for recycled or reduced packaging. Some have made significant reductions, while others are just beginning to integrate more sustainable packaging materials into their product lines. Prana, Rab, Patagonia, and REI ship hiking pants in reduced, recycled, or Forest Stewardship Council-certified packaging materials. Prana has also taken the lead in educating other companies on packaging reduction through efforts like the Responsible Packaging Movement.
Notably, every brand in the hiking pants category tracks its greenhouse gas emissions (except Eddie Bauer, which we could not confirm one way or another). That said, there is wide variation in how comprehensively brands track their greenhouse gas emissions and publicly report progress. REI, for example, is a standout example of excellent emissions tracking transparency. The Science Based Targets Initiative has verified REI’s goal of reducing emissions by 55% by 2030 compared to its 2019 baseline, and the brand publishes annual, publicly accessible data describing its progress. Rab is another leader in this area: It publishes incredibly comprehensive five-year emissions tracking data in its annual impact report, breaking its emissions down by year, source, and scope.
Three-quarters of the brands we reviewed in the hiking pants category publish an annual impact report, providing detailed insight into their sustainability performance. REI, Arc’teryx, Rab, and Columbia all publish impressive, publicly accessible reports each year, sharing data on emissions reductions, responsible materials sourcing, labor practices, and product packaging. Patagonia does not publish a report, instead opting to update its website seasonally with progress toward sustainability initiatives. Reports like these are an essential part of transparency about sustainability initiatives.
Almost 60% of the brands in the hiking pants category meet our criteria for responsible manufacturing practices. Patagonia, Prana, and Arc’teryx partner with Fair Trade USA to ensure that their manufacturers uphold fair labor practices and high environmental impact standards. Prana was the first outdoor brand to manufacture Fair Trade Certified products, and Patagonia now produces more Fair Trade Certified products than any outdoor brand. Participating in audit and certification programs like Fair Wear, Fair Trade, and Fair Labor Association helps brands employ better manufacturing practices for both people and the environment.
Patagonia and Arc'teryx are the clear leaders in hiking pants sustainability. The Patagonia Quandary pants contain extensive recycled content, Bluesign-approved materials, and use a PFAS-free DWR treatment. As of 2025, all new Patagonia products—including hiking pants—are free from intentionally added PFAS, and more than 80% of its products are made in Fair Trade Certified factories. The brand also stands out for its free repair program, recycled packaging, and Worn Wear resale platform. While Patagonia doesn’t publish a traditional impact report, its website offers a constantly updated platform for sustainability data. Arc’teryx also scores highly for sustainability in hiking pants, manufacturing pants with PFAS-free DWR treatments and recycled materials. It offers comprehensive repair services, participates in responsible manufacturing programs, and publishes detailed annual impact reports with emissions tracking progress. Lastly, Arc’teryx also offers a resale and recycling program for used gear.
The Patagonia Quandary pants top our list of the most sustainable hiking pants due to their Bluesign-approved, 96% NetPlus recycled nylon fabric, PFAS-free DWR, and strong performance across Better Trail’s brand-level sustainability criteria. They’re also backed by Patagonia’s industry-leading repair program. The Arc'teryx Gamma and REI Co-op Sahara Convertible pants aren't far behind, standing out for their high recycled content, PFAS-free DWR treatment, and Bluesign-approved fabric.
Sustainability in hiking pants is moving in the right direction, with an increasing number of brands improving the sustainability features of their models yearly. We expect that recycled materials will become even more common as brands innovate lower-cost, higher-performance recycled fabrics. Large brands are likely to roll out an increased number of resale and recycling programs, and we hope to see brands taking steps toward designing pants that are easier to recycle at the end of life. While solution-dyed fabrics haven’t made their way into this category, synthetic materials—like the ones typically used in hiking pants—may become more commonly dyed in this way in the future, as solution-dyeing offers reduced carbon emissions and water use without compromising performance. We also anticipate a wider use of Bluesign-approved materials as more suppliers become certified. Lastly, PFAS will likely be fully phased out from hiking pant DWRs in the near future as both legislative and consumer pressure accelerate the shift to safer chemicals.
