Sustainability
The Flash 22 offers some great sustainability features. At the product level, the pack features recycled ripstop nylon, which is also Bluesign approved. Furthermore, the durable water-repellent (DWR) treatment on the Flash 22 is PFAS free. However, this pack has a below-average longevity rating, which lowers its overall sustainability score.
At the brand level, REI works with Fair Trade USA to ensure responsible manufacturing practices at its supplier facilities. The company also prioritizes Forest Stewardship Council-certified or recycled packaging. In fact, some REI retail stores have eliminated in-store bags altogether. REI has been Climate Neutral Certified since 2021 and tracks its greenhouse gas emissions using the Higg Index. The company publishes a detailed annual impact report to share progress toward its sustainability goals. All in all, the only notable shortcoming of the Flash is REI’s lack of product repair services. Even so, the Flash checks nearly all of our sustainability criteria.
Below we break down in detail all of the Flash 22's sustainability attributes at the product and brand level, including links to in-depth articles on relevant topics. For more, see our guide to the best hiking daypacks and our review of the Flash 22.
